A NEW YEAR IN THE GARDENS

Though you haven't heard from us in a while, we've been quite busy "below the surface of the soil," so to speak. We've bid a sad farewell to Elaine Talbot, PPQA's vice president and treasurer, and a Board member since the community-developed Queen Anne Avenue Streetscape Master Plan was published in 2006. Elaine has been a major part of all the work we've done and projects we've accomplished over the last 11 years and we are certainly going to miss her dedication and support.

At the same time, we have two new Board members. We are pleased to welcome Sheila Callahan and Laura Day.

Sheila spent a number of years on the Queen Anne Community Council and its Parks Committee. She has taken part in our garden work parties and seems a natural fit for the PPQA Board. She has jumped right into the work flow and is pleased to be PPQA's new Treasurer.

Laura is a current member of the Queen Anne Community Council and has now added the PPQA Board to the mix. Laura brings her expertise as a freelance grant writer to our organization as well as her enthusiasm for gardening.

Look for Sheila and Laura digging away in the garden beds at future work parties.

And a work party is what we had on Saturday, February 18th...a morning in the Galer Gardens we designated as "Valentine's Day in the Gardens." Rain couldn't stop this dedicated group of all ages from our "top-of-the-soil" tasks of pruning, weeding, raking, and sweeping: generally tidying up all the beds at Galer. We joined Marianna Clark, a Queen Anne resident and the professional landscaper who will be maintaining the garden beds on behalf of Wenger Design and Landscape, a firm we hired in January.

We all look forward to another blooming year in the gardens!
